Kindergarten

As most of our kindergarteners have completed our K4 preschool curriculum, most K5 students are reading well when they begin “Elementary School” at Pride and Joy. New students are accepted and assessed so we can continue from wherever they are to get them reading well.

The K5 curriculum follows a five-day cycle with daily lessons scheduled for each week. Phonics, Reading, Numbers.

New K5 children learn to read through the use of phonics. As soon as the short sounds of the vowels and the sounds for only three consonants are introduced, they are able to sound out their first words. Later they learn how to read many words, including words with two vowels and words that continue special sounds (letter combinations like sh and ar). Their reading vocabulary naturally grows with each new sound learned.

Numbers/Arithmetic: the students learn to count and recognize numbers 1 through 200. Addition concepts are taught through the sum of 20, and beginning subtraction concepts are introduced. Students also learn to work with telling time and money. Moreover, they are also introduced to multiplication.

Writing: Students learn manuscript and cursive writing that is correlated with their phonics. As they learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet and learn what sound they make, they also learn to write them. Later they learn to write blends, words and sentences.

Skills Development Activity Time/Language Enrichment: During Skill Development students learn visual perception skills, motor coordination and listening skills.

During Activity Time: We enjoy music, art, a unit on Community Helpers, an introduction to American history and geography in America: Our Great Country and a chance to meet people living in other countries in Children Around the World. Furthermore, they enjoy learning about the world around them in God’s World Science.

Language Enrichment: We learn positional words and opposites, rhyming words and analogies, drama, and poetry. Our students will also have a chance to share their experiences and ideas during our weekly “Show and Tell”.

Every morning begins with prayer, Bible lessons, and Bible verses, which are memorized weekly.
